How does Zoloft work?

Zoloft sertraline works by increasing the serotonin secretion in the brain in order to help maintain mental stability and balance.

How should I take Zoloft?

Zoloft sertraline can be taken orally in solid or liquid form, either as a tablet or a liquid concentrate, respectively. Usually prescribed at once a day doses, Zoloft sertralin may be taken either in the morning or in the evening. For best results, sertralin must be taken at regular time schedules, almost around the same time every day. Your doctor will give precise instructions on dosage and intake, and your prescription labels and package blisters will also provide helpful information on such dosage and intake. If there are any vague instructions, make sure to seek doctor or pharmacist opinion.

Recommended dosage must be followed strictly. Increasing or decreasing dosages is not advisable. Liquid concentrates have to be diluted completely prior to use. Administration may be done through the use of a medicine dropper for exact measurement. It will be up to your doctor if he will start you on a reduced or a full dose, with the former allowing for gradual increase in the dosage over a period of time as determined by your doctor. Deliberately reducing or increasing your dose without doctor’s advice is dangerous. You run the risk of overdose. In such a case you will need to get immediate medical attention. In cases of missed doses, don’t double up your upcoming dose to compensate for the mixed one. Overdose may be manifested by hair loss, sex drive changes, drowsiness, extreme fatigue or tiredness, bouts of insomnia, diarrhea, incessant vomiting, irregular heartbeat, dizzy spells, over-excitement, uncontrollable shakes, hallucination, seizures and fainting.

Precautions

Some special precautions before or during the intake of sertraline must be remembered. Your doctor or your pharmacist must be duly informed you have had any allergic reaction to sertraline or any other drugs or medications for that matter. If you are allergic to latex, tell your doctor so especially if you were prescribed the liquid concentrate sertraline. If you are on MAO (or monoamine oxidase) inhibitors, your doctor needs to be apprised, especially for the following MAO inhibitors: isocarboxazid Marplan, phenelzine Nardil, selegiline Zelapar, and tranylcypromine Parnate. The same holds true if you have stopped taking these MAO inhibitors within a two week past period.

Your doctor will also need to be made aware of recent or existing heart conditions, heart attacks or seizures, liver disease, and kidney disease. If you are pregnant or are planning to conceive soon, or if you are breast-feeding, tell your doctor about these conditions. Tell your doctor also about your use of any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs and medications, vitamins and minerals, nutrition supplements and herbal products.

Side effects

Zoloft sertraline will cause side effects that will range from the mild to the serious. The more common side effects are nausea and vomiting, diarrhea or conversely constipation, bloated stomach or stomach pain, appetite loss, weight loss or increase, drowsiness, dizzy spells, extreme fatigue or tiredness, headaches, pain or burning sensations in the extremities, anxiety or nervousness, the shakes in any part of the body, throat constriction or soreness, sex drive changes, and even excessive sweating.
Other more serious side effects include blurred vision or other vision changes or disorders, seizures similar to epilepsy, unusual bruising or bleeding, and hallucinations and nightmares. On occurrence of any of the following, your doctor must be immediately informed.

What should I avoid while taking Zoloft sertraline?

Zoloft sertraline may induce drowsiness so that you should refrain from driving or operating complex machinery or equipment while using sertraline. It may also react differently if not adversely with alcohol so you should also refrain from taking alcoholic beverages while on Zoloft sertraline medication.

Drug interactions

Zoloft sertraline may react differently to a number of medications and substances. As such, you should note the following if you have ever used or are planning to use them: anticoagulants or blood thinners, anti-depressants, aspirin and NSAID medications used as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. Note Advil ibuprofen, and Naprosyn naproxen. Then come Tagamet cimetidine, Valium diazepam, Lanoxin digoxin, and Lithobid lithium.

Take special note and caution also for drugs to treat anxiety, mental illness, Parkinson’s disease, seizures, irregular heartbeats, oral diabetic drugs, and medications for migraine headaches like almotriptan Axert, eletriptan Relpax, frovatriptan Frova, naratriptan Amerge, rizatriptan Maxalt, sumatriptan Imitrex, and zolmitriptan Zomig; and also sedatives; sleeping pills; and tranquilizers.

Shelf life

Zoloft sertraline must be kept in its original container, with lid tightly closed, away from children’s reach, and stored at room temperature without direct exposure to heat, sunlight, or moisture. Shelf life and expiration are usually no less than two years from date of manufacture. The manufacture and expiration dates are indicated on the prescription packages or blisters and should be noted accordingly.
