Soma and Generic Soma is a medication that helps to relax the muscles. It also relieves discomfort and pain associated with muscle injuries; such as sprains, strains and spasms.
The generic name of Soma is carisoprodol, a muscle relaxant generally taken for muscle related
pains and injuries. This medication works through the brain and nerves by blocking out pain
sensations. However, Soma is not a pain reliever that you can take for all sorts of body
pains and aches. You may take Soma with food or immediately after a meal so as to prevent
stomach upsets.
The sedative properties of Soma may impair a person's mental and physical capabilities. Therefore, it is highly recommended that a person taking this medication not perform any hazardous tasks such as driving or operating machineries. Soma can also be addictive with prolonged use. There have been reported cases of withdrawal symptoms following an immediate cessation by its users. If used with other related drugs, this medication can cause seizures resulting from an overdose. Caution must be exercised by patients and their care givers.
Allergic reactions may occur to first time users. You must inform your doctor if you are allergic to certain drugs or medications, especially carisoprodol.
There have been no adequate studies done on pregnant and lactating humans. Inform your physician if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant. As traces of Soma can be found in breast milk, there is a possibility that nursing infants can be affected.
Soma comes in 2 dosage forms and strengths: 250 mg round tablet, 350 mg round tablet.
Unless otherwise prescribed by a physician, Soma should be taken three times daily and before bedtime. This medication should only be taken for two to three weeks.
There have been no studies made as to the safety and effectiveness of Soma to children.
An overdose from Generic Soma usually causes CNS (Central Nervous System) Depression. Other effects of an overdose are seizures, delirium, hallucinations, blurred vision, euphoria and mydriasis. Respiratory depression, dystonic reactions, hypotension are also effects Soma overdose. Probably the most noticeable effect is the loss of muscle coordination.
In case an overdose occurs, patients are recommended to undergo a gastric lavage - preferably within an hour after ingestion.
Patients taking Soma may experience some side effects but these should be generally tolerated by users of the medication. Drowsiness, headache and dizziness are the most common side effects of Soma to the Nervous System. Other patients have reported experiencing vertigo, agitation, tremors, insomnia, irritability and syncope. Gastrointestinal side effects include nausea, vomiting and mild stomach discomfort. Tachycardia and postural hypotension have also been reported in cases of overdose or drug abuse.
