Uses or Indications |
- Prozac is indicated as a treatment for depression and is found to be highly effective on patients suffering from major depressive disorders.
- Used to treat patients who have OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
- Prescribed to patients suffering from the eating disorder Bulimia, otherwise known as the "Binge and Purge" eating disorder.
- Prozac is also used in treatment for Panic disorder with or without the presence of Agoraphobia.
- Sometimes used to treat the following: Obesity due to emotional eating, Alcoholism, Chronic Pain and Various Neuropathies.

How to take Prozac |
The physician's prescription should be followed to the tee when taking this drug. Taking it otherwise can cause damage and decreased effectiveness. Prozac should be taken regularly and missed doses should be made up for as soon as possible. It is important to note that the effectiveness of Prozac can often be seen usually four weeks after the initial dose. So, if you don't see any immediate results after the initial intake just continue using the drug as prescribed.

Drug Precautions |
Prozac is contraindicated to patients with a proven hypersensitivity to the drug or patients that have an allergic reaction to it. The drug should also be used with caution on patients that have liver and kidney problems, Diabetes Mellitus, Lactating mothers, People who have seizures and those that have had a history of suicide attempts.

Drug Interactions |
Drug to Drug Interaction:
- MAOIs - Prozac has a possibly fatal reaction with drugs that are classified as MAOI (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor). MAOI drugs include Marplan and Nardil.
- Thioridazine - Increases the therapeutic and toxic effects of this drug. Avoid using together unless in an indicated Adjunct therapy.
- Lithium - Prozac increases the toxicity of Lithium. Avoid using together.
Drug and Lifestyle Interaction:
- Smoking - Smoking decreases the effectiveness of the drug.
- Alcohol Use - Alcohol use increases the sedative effects of the drug, avoid using together.

Missed Dose |
When you have missed a dose, take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember it. If too many hours have passed, just skip it and double up on the next scheduled dose.

Overdosage |
Overdosing with Prozac is oftentimes fatal. Look out for signs and symptoms of over dosage and inform your physician immediately. Prozac used with other drugs can also have effects that mimic overdosing. Symptoms of Overdosing include the following: Nausea, Palpitations, Drowsiness, Delirium, Syncope (fainting), Fever, Hypotension, Muscular Rigidity and Stupor.

Storage |
Prozac is best stored in a cool dry place or at room temperature. Avoid exposing the drug to direct heat and sunlight, also to immense changes in temperature and moisture.
