Erectile Dysfunction and Alcoholism: Does One Affect the Other?

Erectile Dysfunction and Alcoholism For many men, erection is something that comes almost naturally to all men. However, as the wealth of scientific information on this field grows, erection is a far more complex process than previously thought of. One of the common fallacies that people have about erection is that alcohol and erection are not affecting each other. This belief is often supported by men feeling becoming more sexually potent when taking a shot of alcohol.

The Fallacies

Some of the fallacious belief related to alcohol intake and erection include the following:
  • Men often think that alcohol provides them energy for sexual intercourse (including achieving erection).
  • Some men believe that alcohol intake will make it easy for them to have erection, especially since drinking alcohol sort of makes the body feel hot, a sign many considers a reason why alcohol should be a precursor to sex.
  • Some men believe that their sexual potency is increased because of their body feeling the heat after alcohol intake. This belief is often supported by the way that alcohol beverages are marketed. Such products are often endorsed by half-naked women, suggesting something to the effect that alcohol and erection go together.

The Facts

The very prerequisite for a man to attain erection is the signal of arousal coming from the brain. This signal may be triggered by any of the senses of the body: touch, sight, and scent are the most common causes. Once the signal is processed by the brain, it then sends out messages to the penile area in preparation for the relaxation of the muscles to accommodate blood flow which is a preparation for accepting more blood for erection.

The problem now occurs if a man has taken in a large quantity of alcohol. Alcohol has the ability to affect the functioning of the brain, which can then lead to the immediate and often premature cessation of the sending of the signals that triggers arousal to the different parts of the body, especially the penis. So even if some men feel "hot" after some shots, that feeling actually doesn't last long. As a matter of fact, it is even common for people who drink a lot of alcohol to lose their erection even at the thick of sexual intercourse.

Another way in which alcohol can affect erection is the damage it can cause to the cardiovascular system. Next to the brain, the person's cardiovascular system is important because it is the recipient of the arousal signal from the brain; any defect in it is bound to affect its normal functioning including erection.

Too much alcohol intake can lead to progressive damage to the cardiovascular system in the body that will inhibit the ability of the blood vessels in the penis to receive the increased blood flow. It is also impossible to maintain erection because of the limited supply of blood the vessels can hold. Likewise, too much intake of alcohol also deprives the blood vessels of flexibility, which makes it unable to expand and retract healthily.
